A tense situation unfolded in Rio de Janeiro after a police operation led to gunfire near a popular tourist hiking spot, leaving more than 200 visitors temporarily stranded.
Tourists Trapped on Popular Trail
The incident happened at Morro Dois Irmãos, a well-known hiking destination overlooking Ipanema Beach.
Tourists had gathered early in the morning to watch the sunrise when:
- Gunfire suddenly broke out in the nearby Vidigal favela
- Guides instructed visitors to stay low and remain at the summit
- Around 200 people were unable to descend safely
Police Operation Underway
Authorities had launched a major operation targeting suspected members of the Comando Vermelho, one of Brazil’s most well-known criminal organisations.
The operation involved:
- Civil Police units from multiple regions
- Prosecutors from Bahia
- A coordinated effort to locate and arrest gang members
Chaos and Safety Measures
As gunfire echoed from below:
- A police helicopter hovered over the area
- Tourists stayed seated on the ground for safety
- Roads nearby were blocked using a bus and debris
Despite the fear, guides helped keep the situation under control and prevented panic among visitors.

- Police secured the area
- Tourists were safely escorted down the trail
- At least one suspect was arrested during the operation
Officials later confirmed the operation, known as “Duas Rosas II,” was aimed at dismantling criminal networks.
