A shocking incident off the coast of Hawaii has left a boat captain seriously injured after a young tourist allegedly attacked him during what was meant to be a peaceful snorkelling trip. The sudden violence on the open sea has raised concerns about safety during tourist activities, especially when such incidents happen without warning.
What happened during the snorkel tour?
The incident took place near Kailua-Kona, a popular coastal town known for its water activities and tourism. According to the Hawaii Police Department, the attack happened on Thursday afternoon during a three-hour snorkel tour.
A 21-year-old man, identified as Avery Nissen from eastern Kansas, was on board a fishing boat along with the captain and other passengers. At some point during the trip, he allegedly attacked the 62-year-old captain using a fillet knife.
The attack happened suddenly, catching everyone on board off guard. What was supposed to be a relaxing experience quickly turned into a terrifying situation.
Captain injured in brutal attack
Police reports state that the captain suffered serious injuries during the assault. He received a stab wound to his lower abdomen along with multiple cuts on his head and hands.
Despite the severity of the attack, the captain was rushed to a nearby hospital after the boat returned to shore. Authorities later confirmed that he is in stable condition and receiving treatment.
The injuries show how dangerous the situation became in a very short time, especially in a confined space like a boat.
Suspect restrained and arrested
After the attack began, other people on the boat acted quickly and managed to restrain the suspect. Their actions likely prevented the situation from becoming even worse.
At around 3:21 p.m., police were alerted that the vessel was heading back to HonokÅhau Harbor with both the injured captain and the suspect on board.
Once the boat reached the harbour, officers arrested Avery Nissen without further incident.
Charges and legal action
The suspect is now facing serious criminal charges. These include second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, and second-degree assault.
He is currently being held on a bail amount of $1,570,000. Authorities have not yet shared any clear motive behind the attack, which has added to the mystery of the case.
Nissen is scheduled to appear in Kona District Court, where further legal proceedings will take place.
Investigation still ongoing
At this stage, police are continuing their investigation to understand what led to the violent outburst. Since the motive is still unknown, authorities are asking anyone who may have additional information to come forward.
Incidents like this are rare but concerning, especially in tourist-heavy areas where people expect a safe and enjoyable experience.
