What happened to Makayla Settles?
Makayla Settles, an 18-year-old from North Carolina, moved to Moorpark, California, with hopes of starting college and building a better future. She had planned to attend Moorpark College and had recently moved in with her biological father, Stephen Vincent Chavez, who is 41 years old.
According to her family, Chavez had promised her support, including a car and financial help for her studies. However, within just two days of moving in, the situation reportedly turned horrific.
Her family claims that Makayla fled the house barefoot, in pain, and with visible injuries. She was carrying only a few belongings, including her cat, identification documents, and some cash. Her uncle later took her to Simi Valley Hospital, where medical examination reportedly confirmed sexual assault.
Legal case and arrest
Following the incident, Stephen Vincent Chavez was arrested and charged with multiple serious offences. These included incest, abusing a position of trust, and providing alcohol to a minor. According to reports, he pleaded not guilty to all charges.
He was later released after posting bail set at $250,000. The case is currently being handled in Ventura County Courthouse, where a pre-trial hearing is scheduled.
Makayla’s family has claimed that forensic evidence, including DNA results, supports the allegations. However, officials have not publicly confirmed full details of the evidence.
Struggles after returning home
After the alleged assault, Makayla returned to her hometown in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her family says she struggled deeply with emotional trauma, depression, and mental health issues following the incident.
In December, just a few months after the alleged assault, she died by suicide. Her death has added another layer of pain to an already devastating situation.
Her mother, Carolina Sandoval, has openly expressed her grief, saying that her daughter was never the same after what happened. According to her, Makayla had gone to California with dreams of a better life, but those hopes were completely shattered.
Family fears case may weaken
