A heartbreaking case in New York has led to the arrest of a mother accused of causing the death of her young son by giving him an excessive amount of medication. Authorities say the incident has raised serious concerns about child safety and misuse of common drugs.
Mother Arrested in Child’s Death
Rebecca A. Jordan, 43, has been charged with second-degree manslaughter, tampering with physical evidence, and endangering the welfare of a child. The case is being investigated by the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office.
She was taken into custody following a detailed investigation into the death of her 10-year-old son.
Incident Reported in Halfmoon
Authorities first responded to a call about an unattended death on January 19 at a home in Halfmoon, located near Albany.
Initially, the case required further examination, and investigators spent several months reviewing evidence before making an arrest on April 15.
Excessive Medication Alleged
According to investigators, Jordan allegedly gave her son a large dose of diphenhydramine, a drug commonly found in medications like Benadryl.
Officials say the amount given was far beyond a safe level and could have been enough to kill an adult. The overdose led to intoxication, breathing problems, and aspiration, which ultimately caused the child’s death.
Reason Behind the Act
Prosecutors believe the medication was not given for medical reasons but to manage the child’s behaviour. Authorities stated there is no evidence that the child requested the medicine or needed it for sleep.
Instead, investigators say it was used as a way to handle behavioural issues, which they described as neglectful and dangerous.
Evidence Tampering Allegation
Jordan is also accused of trying to hide evidence by concealing a bottle of the medication. Officials believe this was done to prevent it from being used in the investigation.
Officials Call Case Unusual and Tragic
Brett Eby said the case is highly unusual and not something commonly seen by law enforcement.
Authorities emphasised the seriousness of the situation, noting that child death cases are among the most difficult they handle.
Legal Status and Possible Sentence
Jordan is currently being held at the Saratoga County Jail and is awaiting further court proceedings. If convicted, she could face between 5 and 15 years in prison, along with additional penalties for the evidence tampering charge.
