Driver Sentenced for Fatal DUI Crash
Cesar Navarrete, 27, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple charges, including DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide. The sentencing was announced by the Bradenton Police Department.
In addition to prison time, he will serve 10 years of supervised release and has had his driver’s license permanently revoked.
Victim Identified as Mother of Two
The victim, Sara-Danielle Holmes, 37, was a mother of two young daughters. She was a passenger in a vehicle driven by her boyfriend, Sergio Larcher de Brito, on the night of the crash.
Holmes had just finished work and was heading home when the incident occurred.
Details of the Crash
The crash happened on November 2, 2024, when Navarrete, driving at around 115 miles per hour, ran a red light and slammed into their SUV.
Police said the impact was so severe that it split the vehicle in half. Holmes was rushed to the hospital but later died from her injuries. The other individuals involved, including Navarrete, survived with injuries.
Evidence of Drunk Driving
Authorities reported that Navarrete showed clear signs of intoxication at the scene. Tests later revealed his blood alcohol level was 0.165, which is more than double the legal limit.
Investigators also found that he had a prior DUI conviction and was driving with a suspended license at the time of the crash.
Additional Penalties
Along with his prison sentence, Navarrete has been ordered to pay more than $40,000 in fines and restitution.
The case has also led to community support efforts, including fundraising to help Holmes’ two daughters.
Family’s Grief and Message
Holmes’ family expressed deep pain over the loss. Her mother spoke out about the dangers of reckless driving, describing how such behaviour can turn a vehicle into a deadly weapon.
