Drivers in York County should be ready for delays as repair work continues on a damaged section of Gold Hill Road. The issue started with a water line leak that caused erosion under the road, leading to a sinkhole and ongoing repairs.
What Caused the Road Damage
The problem occurred near the Knightsbridge neighbourhood along Gold Hill Road in York County. Officials confirmed that the damage was caused by a leaking “corporation stop,” which is part of the main water utility line.
Although the leak itself was fixed on the same day it was reported, the water had already weakened the soil underneath the road. This led to erosion and made the roadway unsafe, requiring further repair work.
Why Steel Plates Are Still in Place
Right now, steel plates are covering the damaged section of the road. These plates are being used temporarily to allow vehicles to pass while crews prepare for permanent repairs.
However, drivers are advised to be careful while passing over this area, as the surface may be uneven and traffic could slow down.
Two-Step Repair Process Explained
The repair work is being done in two stages to ensure the road is properly fixed.
The first step involves pouring a special concrete mixture called flowable fill into the damaged area. This material helps stabilise the ground and create a strong base for the road. After pouring, it needs at least 24 hours to harden properly.
The second step will take place after the base has fully set. Crews will return to lay the final asphalt layer on top, completing the road surface.
Timeline and Expected Delays
Work began on Thursday, April 16, with the pouring of the flowable fill. The final asphalt layer is expected to be applied on Monday, April 20, if everything goes as planned.
Due to this work, commuters should expect delays, especially during the morning hours when crews are active. Lane closures and slow-moving traffic are likely in the area.
