A deeply disturbing incident in Omaha, Nebraska, has shocked the community after a 3-year-old boy was nearly kidnapped and injured inside a Walmart. Quick action by police helped prevent a much worse tragedy.
What Happened Inside the Store
According to the Omaha Police Department, the incident took place on the morning of April 14 at a Walmart store.
Police said Noemi Guzman, 31, first shoplifted a knife from inside the store. She then approached a toddler and his guardian in one of the aisles.
Authorities reported that:
- She was holding a large kitchen knife
- Forced the guardian to walk ahead
- Left the child sitting in the shopping cart
- Directed them toward the parking lot
Emergency Call and Police Response
Around 9:15 a.m., police received an emergency call about a woman with a knife and a child inside the store.
Officers quickly reached the location and followed the suspect into the parking lot, where they found her pushing the cart with the child inside.
Confrontation in the Parking Lot
Police said Guzman refused repeated commands to drop the knife and continued making threats.
During the confrontation:
- She slashed the child’s face
- Officers fired their weapons to stop her
- She was struck and later pronounced dead at the scene
Officers immediately tried to provide medical help, but she could not be saved.
Condition of the Child
The child’s guardian and a bystander quickly removed him from the cart and helped him.
The boy was taken to a hospital by emergency responders. Thankfully, his injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.

The police chief, Todd Schmaderer, praised the officers for their quick and professional action, saying it helped save the child’s life.
