St. John’s Fire District marine crews rescued four people from a disabled sailboat in a busy Charleston-area shipping lane near the jetties on Saturday morning.
Rescue Details
The sailboat lost its mast, leaving it adrift between the jetties as a container ship approached. St. John’s Fire Marine 701, with Charleston Fire Department and U.S. Coast Guard support, swiftly transferred all four occupants to safety. Crews then performed a hip tow to shift the vessel out of the channel and anchored it securely.
Aftermath and Lessons
Occupants coordinated a full tow from there. The quick action prevented collision risks and underscores vital inter-agency teamwork in high-stakes maritime zones.
