A 3.0-magnitude earthquake shakes Lake Murray, Irmo, and Columbia

An earthquake of 3.0 magnitude struck the Lake Murray area of Lexington County, South Carolina, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake’s preliminary location was near the dam, just south of Yacht Cove and Hollywood Point, and not far from North Lake Drive.

Widespread Reports

Less than 30 minutes after the quake, over 250 people had reported feeling the tremor through the USGS online reporting tool. The reports came from a wide area, covering regions from Columbia to the east and Red Bank to the south.

This earthquake is part of a series of seismic events that have shaken the eastern portion of Lake Murray over the past month, indicating ongoing seismic activity in the region.
