According to the Boiling Springs Police Department, Quantina Leach, a 47-year-old woman from Shelby, was driving north and turning onto East College Avenue when she hit Stankovic, who was in the crosswalk. Leach remained at the scene, and Stankovic was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.

Leach has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle following the incident.
