A secluded island structure in Charleston County caught fire on Tuesday morning, injuring one person.

A fire damaged a residence on a remote island in Charleston County early Tuesday morning, leaving one person injured, according to the St. John’s Fire District.

Emergency crews responded around 6 a.m. to a reported structure fire on Hopkinson Plantation Island, an isolated property accessible only by a long, narrow dock or by boat. Responding agencies included the Charleston Fire Department, Charleston County EMS and the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

Marine Crew Deployed to Establish Water Supply

Upon arrival, firefighters observed active flames inside the home. Due to the island’s limited access and the extended distance to a traditional water supply, crews deployed a marine unit to assist. Firefighters stretched a hose line down the dock to establish a water source from the river and used golf carts to transport additional equipment across the island.

Fire Chief Ryan Kunitzer credited coordination and preparation for preventing the fire from spreading further, noting that the river serves as the island’s only dependable water source.

Fire Originated Near Fireplace

One resident suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene before being released.

Investigators later determined the fire began near an indoor fireplace and spread to surrounding areas within the home. The investigation remains ongoing.
