Drivers hoping for enhanced traffic enforcement in Mecklenburg County

Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, under Sheriff Garry McFadden, has reformed and relaunched its specialized Traffic Unit, originally created in October 2024, to boost road safety and cut crime through targeted enforcement.

Unit Performance

In 2025, deputies made over 3,500 traffic stops, yielding 31 arrests—some tied to drugs and firearms—plus five crash investigations since January 2026 using new state certification tools. This allows on-scene reporting, speeding responses and easing loads on CMPD and NC Highway Patrol.

Local drivers like Laila Mungin see potential benefits amid Charlotte’s erratic driving but worry about added congestion, while George Wilson welcomes more patrols for safety. Critics highlight staffing shortages at jails and elsewhere as a hurdle to sustainability.
