John Robert Simpson, a 27-year-old from Piedmont, South Carolina, died from smoke inhalation complications during a backyard grass fire. His death was ruled accidental by the Anderson County Coroner’s Office.

On Wednesday evening around 6:40 p.m., Anderson County 911 received a call about a grass fire on Grantham Road in Piedmont. Responders arrived to find homeowners trying to extinguish the blaze in their backyard.

Victim Details

Simpson was treated on-site for smoke inhalation before being transported to Prisma Health in Greenville. He passed away there at 8 p.m. the same evening, with the coroner citing exacerbation of asthma due to smoke inhalation as the cause.
