Beaufort County in the Lowcountry is bracing for a prolonged cold snap from an arctic air mass, with sub-freezing nights expected through the weekend despite dodging Winter Storm Fern’s ice and snow.

Current Advisory

A National Weather Service cold weather advisory is active for southeast South Carolina from 10 p.m. Monday to 9 a.m. Tuesday, with more likely as overnight lows hit the mid-20s and wind chills drop to the upper teens to low 20s.

Weekly Outlook

Monday features sunny skies with highs near 52°F but gusty winds; similar patterns persist Tuesday through midweek with highs in the upper 40s to 50°F and freezing nights. Clouds build by week’s end, bringing a 20% shower chance late Friday into Saturday, where lows stay in the low 40s daytime and potential light rain/snow showers loom at 20% odds. Sunday offers partial sun with mid-40s highs, still below normal.

Warming Shelters

To aid residents during nightly freezes from Jan. 26-29 (5:30 p.m. to 8 a.m.), shelters include Christ Lutheran Church at 829 William Hilton Parkway, Hilton Head Island (meals provided, no weapons/alcohol/smoking/pets except service animals; transport aid via 843-422-7640). Sea Island Presbyterian Church at 81 Lady’s Island Drive, Beaufort, offers dinner, breakfast, showers, and the same restrictions (call 843-525-0696).
