Greenville officials report numerous wrecks due to slippery roadways.

Greenville, S.C., Police Chief J.H. Thompson observed multiple vehicles in wrecks or ditches during his Sunday morning drive amid icy streets from the ongoing winter storm. Officials from police and fire departments strongly advise residents to stay off roads unless travel is essential, as more than half the cars he passed were crash-involved.

Accident Response

Greenville City Fire Department handled at least two serious accidents since sleet started Saturday night, with Fire Chief Brian Horton noting risks to responders from sliding vehicles. First responders urge staying home to ensure safe operations during this hazardous period.

Road Treatment

Public works crews deployed over 4,050 pounds of ice melt and 30 truckloads of salt to combat the ice sheet on streets. Officials also warn against downtown walking or sledding, which hinders plowing and endangers pedestrians near treatment equipment.
