Cold shelters open across the Upstate and Western North Carolina as winter weather is expected

Cold weather shelters are opening across the Upstate of South Carolina and western North Carolina ahead of a potential winter storm this weekend. These facilities provide essential refuge during extreme cold, with specific hours and eligibility noted at each site.

Spartanburg Shelters

  • Extreme Cold Weather Shelter at 701 Saxon Avenue operates from 7 PM to 10 PM.
  • Spartanburg Rescue Mission at 189 North Forest Street is open 7 AM to 2 PM.​

Greenville County Shelters

  • Shepherd’s Gate (women and children only) at 11 Regency Hill Drive runs 7 AM to 2 PM.​
  • Greenville Rescue Mission (men only) at 575 West Washington Street is available 7 AM to 2 PM.​

Other Locations

  • Cherokee County Rescue Mission at 227 Henderson St., Gaffney, open 7 AM to 2 PM.​
  • Asheville: Men’s Winter Safe Shelter at 91 New Leicester Highway (6 PM-8 PM); Women’s at 27 Balm Grove Avenue (6 PM-8 PM); Transformation Village (women and children) at 30 Olin Haven Way (6 PM-7 AM).
