Four places in Beaufort County have started a program to compost food waste.

Beaufort County, South Carolina, has launched a composting pilot program to help residents manage food waste more sustainably by diverting it from landfills. The initiative provides drop-off bins at four convenience centers, promoting eco-friendly waste reduction and compost production for community use.

Program Locations

Food waste drop-offs are available at:

  • Shanklin Convenience Center, 80 Shanklin Road, Beaufort.
  • Bluffton Convenience Center, 104 Simmonsville Road.
  • St. Helena Island Convenience Center, 639 Sea Island Parkway.
  • Hilton Head Island Convenience Center, 26 Summit Drive.

Participation Steps

Residents must visit the Beaufort County Solid Waste and Recycling composting website, complete a short training video and quiz to receive a unique PIN for bin access. This process ensures only approved materials enter the bins, minimizing contamination. Additional training sessions, both virtual and in-person, will launch soon.
