Eight cows were killed in Horry County, South Carolina, after escaping and wandering onto Highway 22 near Enoch Road on a Saturday night. A Marion County couple, Heather and Jason Shulze, struck seven of the animals while driving westbound with their 14-year-old son, totaling their recently purchased Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Incident Details
The crash occurred amid pitch-black conditions, with the black cows nearly invisible against the dark road, unlike more visible deer. The couple described the deafening impact and surreal aftermath, with dead cattle strewn across the roadway, sounds and visions replaying in their minds. They sustained only minor injuries like scratches and airbag burns but expressed concern for their son’s first major accident experience.
Aftermath and Response
Horry County police posted advisories on Facebook around 10:30 p.m., warning drivers as crews worked overnight to round up remaining livestock in nearby woods. No public alerts had been issued despite earlier videos of cattle on roadsides that afternoon, leaving hours for potential prevention. The family now faces the loss of their dependable daily vehicle, deemed unrepairable.
