DD2 board votes to repurpose Spann Elementary School

Dorchester School District Two trustees unanimously voted Monday to repurpose James H. Spann Elementary School, one of the district’s oldest campuses opened in 1959, into the Spann Education Center starting in the 2026–2027 school year.

The site will consolidate district programs including adult education, special education, Child Find, technology services, and the parenting center, many of which currently operate from trailers or scattered locations.

Over 500 students will be redistricted: about 250 to Summerville Elementary after its 2026 classroom additions, and 202 to Eugene Sires Elementary, aiming to balance enrollment, cut travel times, and optimize capacity at smaller schools.

Community meetings in October and November gathered feedback, with transition support planned via spring open houses, campus visits, and staffing continuity.
