A Missouri woman, Quatavia Givens, 33, has been sentenced to life in prison plus 15 years for the murder of 4-year-old Darnell Gray, whom she was babysitting. Givens pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, child abuse, and abandonment of a corpse. She is eligible for parole after 30 years.

The Crime

Darnell Gray, who had recently moved to Missouri from Chicago, was under Givens’ care on October 25, 2018. Givens reported him missing and participated in a six-day search, bringing snacks, clothes, and even giving interviews about his disappearance.

Investigators later found that Givens had beaten and smothered Darnell and dumped his body in a wooded area in Jefferson City. An autopsy revealed that the boy died from blunt force trauma and smothering.

Deceptive Actions

Volunteers and the community described Givens as manipulative. She staged the search for Darnell to appear innocent, including meticulously claiming missing items like juice boxes and clothing. Mary Williams Coley of Missouri Missing Volunteers said, “Looking back knowing that she was the one that hurt this baby, it just lets you know that this is a master manipulator.”

Family Impact

Darnell’s father, Kijuanis Gray, who had moved from Chicago for a better life, trusted Givens to care for his son. “I trusted her to watch him. I wasn’t expecting her to do this to him,” he said. The child’s mother still lived in Chicago, and Darnell was her only child.

Legal Proceedings

The case faced delays due to extended autopsy studies and Givens being deemed temporarily incompetent to proceed, which slowed her transfer to the Department of Mental Health. Despite these delays, Cole County prosecutor Locke Thompson said Givens’ guilty plea is “an important step toward accountability for the defendant, closure for our community, and justice for Darnell.”
