A 26-year-old Amazon Fulfillment Center worker, Mohamed A. Hared, has been sentenced to just over 10½ years in prison for fatally shooting his co-worker, Ahmed Ibrahim Cariif, in Minnesota. Hared received credit for the 700 days he had already served. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder without intent.
The Shooting Incident
The shooting occurred on June 29, 2024, around 4 a.m. in the Amazon facility parking lot in Dakota County. Officers responded after multiple 911 calls, including one from Hared, who admitted he had “accidentally” shot a co-worker.
First responders found Cariif lying face down between two cars, pronounced dead at the scene. Hared was nearby with a gun in hand, while a third colleague, who had also called 911, waited inside the facility.
Argument Over Flashlight
Hared, Cariif, and the witness were carpooling to work together. Hared had brought a firearm to work, stored in the car. Earlier that morning, Hared noticed a flashlight attachment was missing from his gun and accused Cariif and the witness of taking it. Both denied the accusation.
During a break at 4 a.m., the three men went to look for the flashlight. Hared carried the gun in his waistband. According to him, Cariif became aggressive, and in the struggle, the gun accidentally discharged, fatally wounding Cariif.
Witness Account and Security Footage
The witness testimony and security footage contradicted Hared’s claims. Surveillance showed Hared threw the first punch in an initial altercation and never attempted to retreat, even though he had opportunities to do so. During the second fight, Hared pulled out the gun and fired multiple shots at Cariif within seconds.
Autopsy Findings
The autopsy confirmed that Cariif was struck in the chest. The bullet hit his heart, lung, and aorta, causing fatal injuries.
