Food insecurity is surging in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina this holiday season, with the Lowcountry Food Bank reporting a tripling of daily visitors seeking emergency assistance—from around 20 to 60 people per day.
The organization’s holiday food drive has reached just 24% of its $10,000 goal as the December 19 deadline approaches, prompting partnerships like Live 5 to boost donations. Even families receiving SNAP benefits struggle to cover basic nutritional needs, highlighting the crisis’s severity during this critical time of year.
Lowcountry Food Bank President and CEO Nick Osborne emphasized food’s role in family unity, noting that every dollar donated provides a meal for a family of three. Residents can contribute nonperishable goods or monetary gifts, with all funds directed toward purchasing fresh, whole foods for underserved communities.
