This year, Santa came early to Ashley Phosphate Road and the United States. Highway 78 commuters.
The Palmetto Commerce Interchange, originally scheduled to be completed in February 2026, is now available to the public as of November 17.
The $90 million makeover began in 2013 and was fully funded by a 2016 half-cent sales tax. Construction began in August 2023, and the project was completed within budget, according to a Charleston County release.
According to Charleston County, the intersection will shorten travel times, broaden access options, and improve traffic flow along Interstate 26 between Ashley Phosphate Road and U.S. Highway 78. The interchange is intended to avoid the residential areas along the freeway.
The interchange was designed by Davis & Floyd, with HDR providing construction, engineering, and inspection. Banks Construction served as the general contractor.
