Charleston County, South Carolina – The ribbon will be cut on Monday for I-26’s interchange project, which is expected to relieve traffic congestion at the U.S. Highway 78 and Ashley Phosphate Road exits.
Local and state leaders will meet near the interchange to commemorate the completion of the Palmetto Commerce Interchange, which connects two important thoroughfares that frequently see high traffic entering I-26 during peak travel periods.
Construction on the project, which is funded by the 2016 Transportation Sales Tax, began in August 2023 and was finished ahead of schedule.
The Charleston County Government stated that the new junction will “reduce travel times, expand access options, and improve traffic flow throughout the Interstate 26 corridor between Ashley Phosphate Road and Highway 78, providing a more efficient commute for area travelers.”
The entire restoration cost about $90 million.
