Charleston, South Carolina – The Charleston Police Department reported on Thursday that Detective Melvin Magwood, a 26-year veteran, had died.
In 1994, Detective Magwood began patrolling the streets of downtown Charleston for CPD. While on patrol, he educated incoming Charleston police and received countless letters of gratitude from the citizens he served.
Magwood joined the Central Detective Bureau four years later and was commended for his efforts to apprehend an armed robbery suspect in 2011. Magwood and his Special Victims Unit team were nominated for Team of the Year in 2012 for their work.
Detective Magwood contributed his knowledge and service to the Special Victims Unit until he retired in 2020.
“Melvin has spent over 25 years serving the people of Charleston with integrity and compassion. He truly exemplified the finest of CPD. We are truly grateful for his dedication and the impact he had on our community. “Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time,” Chief Walker stated.
Comments flooded in on an agency post devoted to Magwood, recalling his generosity and good manners throughout his life.
