Mount Pleasant, South Carolina — According to Mount Pleasant Police Department investigations, a USPS site has been linked to a number of check fraud cases.
A total of approximately $35,000 was stolen from several persons in 2025 alone, with reports still being unearthed.
The earliest cases of check fraud date back to February 2025, when a couple allegedly placed a check in the drive-through postal box at the post office at 1050 Johnnie Dodds Boulevard.
According to the police report, the victim indicated that the check was intercepted along its path and altered to show a different amount for a different recipient. According to authorities, the initial check for $3,987.53 was altered to read $13,987.58. Fraud services discovered the charge and stopped it before the suspect could collect any money.
The second reported case of check fraud occurred on June 16 at the same post office location.
According to a police report, the victims attempted to submit a $8,700 check to the South Carolina Department of Revenue on July 20, but it was intercepted and the payee was changed. On July 14, the check was placed into a Bank of America account.
The most recent fraud attempt occurred Wednesday, when two victims, a husband and woman, informed police that their personal checks had been falsified.
According to the victim’s statement, on October 1, she mailed a $11,118 check to her bank at the USPS location at 1050 Johnnie Dodds Boulevard, using the inside mailbox. Days later, the bank alerted her that her payment was past due.
According to the report, further inquiry revealed that the check’s date was changed to 10/01/26, as well as the payee. Despite the alterations, her signature apparently remained same.
