Charleston, South Carolina – On Tuesday, officials broke ground for two intersection improvements on James Island.
This project’s intersections are Fort Johnson Road/Camp Road and Secessionville Road.
“And today, James Island is reaping the immediate benefits. “What an important project,” remarked Kylon Middleton, chairman of the Charleston County Council.
The intersection of Fort Johnson Road and Secessionville Road will be signalized, featuring crosswalks, pedestrian refuge spaces, pedestrian signals, and dedicated turn lanes.
The intersection of Camp Road and Fort Johnson will be changed into a roundabout.
Jenny Costa Honeycutt, the Charleston County District 9 Councilmember, spearheaded the initiative and stated that safety elements are being added to these crossings.
“Having run on a platform of safe roads, this is the penultimate experience to be able to break ground on one of the least safe intersections, two unsafe intersections in my district,” Honeycutt noted.
This project is supported by the transportation sales tax, which was included in the 2016 Transportation Sales Tax vote.
“This is just a very well-traveled crossroads at Camp and Fort Johnson, as well as Secessionville and Fort Johnson, due to the volume of traffic that is currently passing through this area. We have a high school and soccer fields nearby. “It was no longer safe to use a simple stop sign, so you needed a managed controlled mechanism,” Honeycutt explained.
The basic purpose is to keep everyone safe.
“So we’re addressing traffic flow and safety at both intersections,” said Eric Adams, Charleston County’s director of Public Works.
Construction is planned to commence within the next several months.
