A pair of minor earthquakes were observed in Upstate

Seismic instruments detected two minor earthquakes in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, on Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Details of the Quakes

  • First quake: 1.8 magnitude, recorded shortly after 5 p.m., about 8 kilometers east of Cross Anchor in the Cross Keys area near S.C. Highway 49, at a depth of 6.8 kilometers.
  • Second quake: 1.9 magnitude, detected less than 30 minutes later in the same area at a depth of 1.6 kilometers.

Impact and Observations

These quakes are among the smallest recorded by the USGS. While generally imperceptible to residents, such seismic activity is detectable by instruments. Millions of similar minor earthquakes are recorded worldwide each year.
