Moncks Corner, South Carolina. Santee Cooper and Century Aluminum have agreed to provide more power to the manufacturer’s Mt. Holly factory until 2031.
Century officials said the decision will help restart a smelter that is now idle, increasing production by 50,000 metric tons and improving the United States’ overall aluminum output by 10%. Century intends to invest $50 million in the project and generate over 100 jobs, allowing the facility, which is presently working at 75% capacity, to resume full production in summer 2026 for the first time since 2015.
“Century Aluminum is a major contributor to economic prosperity in Berkeley County and the entire Charleston region, and they are playing a leading role in regenerating America’s aluminum industry,” said Jimmy Staton, President and CEO of Santee Cooper. “Santee Cooper is proud to be the driving force behind Century, supporting the high-quality products they manufacture, the significant contributions they make to our community, and the good jobs they provide to our neighbors. We’re excited to be a part of this expansion and hope to work together for many more years.”
Century CEO Jesse Gary hailed President Donald Trump for his company’s “leadership” in restarting US aluminum production.
