Sumter County, South Carolina — A stabbing sparked a high-speed chase and exchange of gunfire between a suspect and deputies Wednesday evening, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities say deputies responded to a domestic disturbance on Wendemere Drive at 6:13 p.m. and discovered a victim with several serious stab wounds from her ex-boyfriend, Wendell Chisolm.
Witnesses told deputies that Chisolm stole his ex-girlfriend’s white Hyundai and gun before possibly driving toward Charleston.
Shortly after, deputies observed the vehicle near Queen’s Chapel and Old Camden Highway and attempted a traffic stop.
Throughout the 45-minute chase, the suspect refused to stop and fired at deputies.
According to authorities, during the chase, Chisolm allegedly fired at deputies while driving at 100 mph, endangering several drivers.

According to authorities, the pursuit continued through Sumter and Kershaw counties before crashing on Ashwood School Road in Lee County.
According to authorities, the suspect was shot during the incident and taken to Prisma Health Tuomey before being pronounced dead.
No deputies were hit by gunfire.
One deputy suffered an ankle injury and was transported to Prisma Health Tuomey. He’s expected to recover and return to duty.
“This afternoon, the suspect attempted to kill someone, then one of our deputies. “I’m glad he failed in both attempts,” Sheriff Anthony Dennis said. He also thanked the deputies for handling the situation professionally.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and the South Carolina Highway Patrol were tasked with investigating the incident.
The stabbing victim’s condition has not been released, and the investigation is still ongoing.
