Isle of Palms recognizes good samaritans for saving a driver who accidentally drove into Morgan Creek

ISLE OF PALMS, South Carolina – The City of Isle of Palms celebrated two good Samaritans on Tuesday night for jumping into action and saving a rideshare driver who unintentionally drove into Morgan Creek last August.

The event occurred on Saturday, August 23, when heavy rain fell in the area, leading the driver to become disoriented.

Robert Heaton and Thomas “Brandon” Blackwell were honored with the Isle of Palms 30 award, which is infrequently presented to persons who have demonstrated exceptional citizen service.

“I just kept telling him, “Take your seatbelt off.” Thank goodness the seatbelt came off, but in the process of attempting to get him out, he went under the water, so time was of the importance,” Heaton said.

When the two discovered the driver had driven into the creek, they acted quickly to rescue the person from the sinking vehicle.

“Their actions are an example of what the Signal 30 award is meant to recognize,” Isle of Palms city officials stated.
