Charleston County, South Carolina — Human skeleton remains were discovered on a barrier island off the coast of McClellanville this week, according to officials.
The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office reports that a citizen discovered the remains on Cape Island on September 17. The agency’s marine patrol and forensic services sections responded to the incident.
The remains have been handed to the Charleston County Coroner’s Office, which is seeking to identify them. If you have information about a missing family member, please contact the coroner’s office.
“Please provide any pertinent information about your missing loved one, along with your contact details, so that we may work toward a possible comparison with the remains currently in our custody,” the chief deputy coroner, Brittney Martin, stated.
Cape Island is the northernmost point of the 66,306-acre Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, which spans 22 miles along the South Carolina coast.
