Proposed Changes to the Leash Ordinance
Mount Pleasant leaders are discussing potential changes to their leash ordinance, which would allow dogs to go off-leash in specific areas during designated hours.
Currently, the town’s ordinance requires dogs to be on a leash in all public spaces. The Health Recreation and Events Committee will meet on Tuesday to explore the possibility of bringing this idea to the town council for further consideration.
Looking to Neighboring Towns for Guidance
Councilmembers plan to look at neighboring towns such as Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island, and Charleston for guidance on where and when dogs should be allowed to be off-leash.
Mixed Reactions from Residents
Residents had mixed reactions to the proposal. Some, like Destiny Simmons, supported the idea, emphasizing the importance of training dogs to ensure they are comfortable off-leash. “Dogs deserve to be free,” Simmons said, adding, “It’d be better if they had some type of training so they’d be comfortable off leash.”
However, others, like Alex Sesek, expressed concerns about safety. “It’s not just for the safety of the people but for the animals as well,” Sesek explained, noting that keeping dogs on a leash ensures both pets and people remain safe.
Next Steps
Mount Pleasant leaders say that Tuesday’s committee meeting will serve as an opportunity to gauge whether council members are interested in taking further action on the matter.
