U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace officially launched her campaign for governor of South Carolina on Wednesday, delivering a passionate speech at Myrtle Beach’s Veterans Cafe and Grille. The three-term Congresswoman from South Carolina’s Lowcountry is aiming to challenge the status quo and replace incumbent Gov. Henry McMaster in the upcoming election.
Mace’s Campaign Kickoff
Mace, who announced her candidacy in Charleston earlier this week, expressed her commitment to bringing change to the state, emphasizing the need for “truth” and the support of voters. “I can’t do it alone. I’ve got to do it with God’s grace, and I’ve got to do it with every single voter in Horry County who is ready for the truth,” Mace said during her speech.
Key Supporters and Rival Candidates
Mace is one of several high-profile Republicans vying for the governor’s seat. Other notable candidates in the race include Attorney General Alan Wilson, U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman, and Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette. Mace has positioned herself as a strong advocate for conservative values, aligning herself with former President Donald Trump and advocating for policies such as rolling back transgender rights.
Veteran Support and Controversial Policies
Mace’s stance on transgender rights has made her a polarizing figure. Last year, she introduced legislation to ban transgender women from using women’s restrooms and changing areas on Capitol Hill. At her campaign event, she was supported by veterans, including Marcus, who emphasized her service as a veteran. “The world is changing. We need to protect those that served the country,” he said.
Polling Results
A recent poll by Targoz Market Research, conducted between July 21 and July 25, showed Mace leading Attorney General Alan Wilson by 1%, within the margin of error of plus or minus 2.77%. This suggests a tight race as the campaign progresses.
Protests and Disputes at the Event
Outside the event, several protestors voiced their opposition to Mace’s policies. Some attendees, like Carole Bellacera, claimed they were denied entry based on their political views. “I’m a veteran. I’m an American. I have a ticket, I have a question and I deserve to be able to ask it,” Bellacera said. Other individuals, such as Risa Krmpotich of Conway, also reported difficulties getting inside.
Campaign’s Response
Mace’s campaign spokesperson, Sydney Long, denied the allegations, stating, “There were several Democrats in the room. Congresswoman Mace welcomes all viewpoints at her events, but if you are a risk to the safety of others or harass others, you’re out.”
