A 3-year-old girl in Ohio was fatally mauled by her father’s dogs in late 2024. Her father has now been sentenced to a minimum of five years in prison for the tragic incident.
Court Conviction and Sentencing
On Friday, May 22, Warren Houston was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, reckless homicide, and endangering children in connection with the December 2024 death of his daughter, Kingsley Wright.
Judge Virginia Tallent of the Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas handed down the sentence, according to FOX19 and WKRC, a CBS affiliate.
Houston received five to seven and a half years in prison, followed by two to five years of probation upon release.
Details of the Incident
The fatal attack occurred on December 27, 2024, while Kingsley was visiting her father’s Cincinnati apartment. Prosecutors said Houston and his girlfriend were asleep as his two pit bull terriers attacked the toddler for nearly 30 minutes. Kingsley ultimately died from a dislocated neck and blood loss.
Authorities reported that Houston kept the dogs in a cage with a broken latch, knowing that at least one of them was dangerous. Prosecutors argued that allowing Kingsley to sleep in the same room as the dogs demonstrated a reckless disregard for her safety.
Judge Tallent agreed, telling the court, “You failed at that time to take any reasonable step to ensure her safety. The harm that was caused in this case is catastrophic and irreversible.” She added that the dangerous conditions had existed over a period of time and “culminated in a death that cannot be reversed.”
Defense Statement
Houston’s attorney called the incident a tragic accident, according to FOX19.
Family Reaction
During sentencing, Kingsley’s mother, Gina Smith, shared a statement through Assistant Prosecutor Elyse Deters.
“Kingsley was abruptly and violently taken away due to Warren Houston’s recklessness, carelessness, and glaring indifference towards Kingsley’s safety and well-being,” Smith said. “Every morning is the beginning of a new nightmare for me.”
She continued, “I see no light at the end of my dark and seemingly infinite tunnel. All I see now is a meaningless existence, without purpose, where there once was purpose, Kingsley.”
Remembering Kingsley Wright
Kingsley’s obituary described her as “a happy girl with a beautiful laugh and smile.” She loved to sing and dance for her family and always looked for the bright side of life, bringing joy to those around her.
