Three people were arrested at the Baymont Inn & Suites in Florence County, South Carolina, following a targeted law enforcement operation at a property recently declared a public nuisance.
Arrests and Charges
On Wednesday, deputies arrested:
- Antonio Demetrice Hemingway, 36 – possession of marijuana and possession of a firearm or ammunition by a convicted felon
- Kionne Delonte Echols, 41 – possession with intent to distribute controlled substances, cocaine, and crack
- Rontrell Benjamin, 37 – possession of methamphetamine, possession with intent to distribute crack and cocaine
During the search, deputies also recovered drugs and a firearm. The three suspects are being held at the Florence County Detention Center pending a bond hearing.
Two additional individuals were arrested for panhandling and later released on personal recognizance bonds.
Background: Public Nuisance and Temporary Injunction
Last month, the Florence County Court of Common Pleas declared the Baymont Inn & Suites a public nuisance and prohibited the property owners from continuing operations. Residents were given only a few hours to vacate the property, causing stress and financial strain for families living there.
Residents like Deanne Williams and Robert Cauthen said the sudden notice made it difficult to find alternative housing and cover unexpected costs.
Law Enforcement Statement
Sheriff TJ Joye said the area had become a hotspot for illegal narcotics and violent crime, straining public safety resources. He emphasized that targeted enforcement will continue in problem areas until the community is safe.
Major Michael Nunn added that the temporary closure of the motel aims to improve safety and allow law enforcement to focus resources elsewhere. The property will be fenced off, and anyone found there after the closure will be taken into custody.
