A serious fire broke out at a nightclub in west Charlotte early Friday morning, and police say it was not an accident. Authorities have now arrested a suspect who is accused of starting the fire using dangerous homemade explosives. The incident has raised concerns about safety and property damage in the area.
Fire Breaks Out at West Charlotte Nightclub
The fire started around 5:22 a.m. on Tuckaseegee Road in Charlotte. Firefighters reached the location quickly and found the building already covered in heavy flames.
The situation became more serious as the fire spread, forcing crews from the Charlotte Fire Department to call for a second alarm. This means extra firefighters and equipment were brought in to control the blaze.
Extra Challenges Faced by Firefighters
Fire crews had to deal with more than just flames. The area around the building had:
- Downed power lines
- Small brush fires nearby
- Fast-spreading flames due to dry conditions
These hazards made the firefighting operation more difficult and risky. Despite this, crews worked efficiently to bring the fire under control.
Fire Declared Intentional
After the fire was extinguished, the Charlotte Fire Investigation Task Force began examining the scene. Their investigation revealed that the fire was intentionally set.
Officials quickly identified the suspect as James Thomas Johnson Jr..
Use of Molotov Cocktails
According to court records, the suspect allegedly used Molotov cocktails to start the fire at The Garden Bar and Lounge.
A Molotov cocktail is a simple but dangerous explosive made using a bottle filled with flammable liquid. It can cause serious fires and damage within seconds.
Charges Filed Against the Suspect
Police have charged Johnson with serious offences, including:
- Malicious use of explosives to damage property
- Burning an unoccupied commercial building
These charges can lead to strict punishment if proven in court.
Extent of the Damage
The fire caused major damage to different parts of the nightclub, including:
- The front entrance area
- The parking lot
- The side patio
Officials have estimated the total damage to be around $90,000. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported so far, as the building was unoccupied at the time.
Investigation Still Ongoing
Authorities have not yet shared details about why the suspect allegedly started the fire. Police are continuing their investigation to understand the motive behind the incident.
More updates are expected as officials gather additional information.
