Officials say recovery efforts are underway following a water rescue event in Newberry County

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) confirmed the recovery of a man’s body from Lake Murray near the Newberry–Lexington County line. The tragic incident occurred during a water operation on Saturday when the man attempted to help someone in distress.

Details of the Incident

According to SCDNR, the man was part of a group on a boat when they noticed another person in distress on the water. Several people from the boat entered the water to assist, but during the rescue attempt, one man failed to resurface. Despite efforts to locate him, the man’s body was recovered by SCDNR divers late Sunday night.

Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster reported that at about 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, SCDNR requested assistance from Newberry County Water Rescue and Fire Rescue units to help in the search for the missing man.
