A positive community effort in Charleston has helped improve safety for dozens of families. Local firefighters and volunteers recently worked together to install smoke alarms in homes, aiming to reduce fire risks and protect residents.
What Was the Initiative About?
The effort was led by the St. Andrews Fire Department, which partnered with local businesses and volunteers to carry out the project.
Over the weekend:
- Teams visited 44 homes in the Ponderosa Community
- A total of 151 smoke alarms were installed
- Residents received added protection and early warning systems
This initiative is part of a larger goal to improve community safety and preparedness.
Support from Local Partners
The project was made possible through teamwork and local support. Volunteers from Hendrick Automotive Group joined firefighters to help with the installations.
In addition, Lowe’s of West Ashley donated the smoke alarms used in the homes.
These partnerships played a key role in making the initiative successful.
Why Smoke Alarms Matter
Smoke alarms are one of the most important safety tools in any home. They provide early warning in case of fire, giving people more time to escape and call for help.
By installing these alarms, the team has:
- Reduced the risk of fire-related injuries
- Increased awareness about home safety
- Helped families feel more secure
Community Impact
The fire department highlighted that such partnerships are essential for improving safety across the area. Efforts like this support their Community Risk Reduction mission and strengthen protection for residents.
The initiative also shows how local organisations and businesses can come together to make a real difference.
