A disturbing case from South Londonderry Township has left many people shocked and confused. What began as a simple welfare check turned into a serious criminal investigation involving a husband accused of hiding his wife’s death for weeks.

Body Found During Welfare Check

Police visited the home after family members of Sharlene Mikula requested a well-being check on April 14. When officers arrived, her husband, Michael Mikula, allegedly told them she was not at home.

However, once police entered the house and began checking inside, they found Sharlene Mikula’s body. According to authorities, she was in an advanced state of decomposition, suggesting she had been dead for quite some time.

Allegations Against the Husband

Investigators say Michael Mikula knew about his wife’s death but did not inform anyone. Instead, he is accused of living in the same house with her body for at least a month.

He now faces several serious charges, including:

  • Abuse of a corpse
  • Neglect of a dependent person
  • Recklessly endangering another person
  • Tampering with evidence

Authorities also stated that he may have taken steps to hide the death.

What the Husband Told Police

According to reports, Michael Mikula told detectives that his wife had been unwell for some time. He said she had little appetite in the weeks before her death and that he tried to ensure she ate at least one meal daily.

He claimed he later found her dead at home. He also said that signs of decomposition became noticeable only about a week before police arrived.

Victim’s Health History

Sharlene Mikula’s family shared that she had been dealing with multiple mental health issues. She had also spent time in a behavioural health facility in 2025.

Medical records reportedly showed that she lost more than 100 pounds over the course of a year, indicating serious health concerns before her death.

How the Situation Came to Light

The case came into focus when family members became worried and requested a welfare check. Around the same time, neighbours and a new property owner reportedly noticed a strong, unpleasant smell coming from the house.

This led to further suspicion and eventually the discovery of the body.

Legal Status

Michael Mikula has been arrested and is currently being held at a local correctional facility. His preliminary court hearing is scheduled for April 23.
