A shocking incident from Leesburg has left a community disturbed after a situation involving dog attacks turned into a deadly shooting. What started as an attempt to deal with aggressive dogs quickly escalated into a tragic loss of life.
What Happed at the Scene
According to authorities, deputies from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at a homeless camp on Griffin Road.
The initial report was about a woman being attacked by multiple dogs. However, while the emergency call was still ongoing, the situation took a sudden turn when a gunshot was heard in the background.
When officers arrived, they found Shawn Cyriacks with a gunshot wound. He was later declared dead.
How the Incident Escalated
Police say the accused, Matthew Lee Pasco, had gone outside after hearing about the dog attack.
According to a witness:
- Pasco said he intended to kill the dogs
- An argument started between him and Cyriacks, who owned the dogs
- Cyriacks tried to stop him from harming the animals
During this heated exchange, Pasco allegedly made a threatening statement suggesting that Cyriacks could also be killed if he interfered.
The Fatal Shooting
Investigators say the situation escalated quickly. Pasco was reportedly carrying a firearm equipped with a laser.
During the argument:
- Cyriacks challenged whether Pasco would actually shoot
- Pasco allegedly responded with a threat
- He then shot Cyriacks in the chest
Authorities confirmed that the victim was unarmed and did not make any threats before being shot.
Aftermath and Arrest
After the shooting, Pasco fled the scene. However, he was later arrested on Sunday and is now in custody.
He has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held in jail without bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 18.
