A heartbreaking incident in Oregon has led to a major lawsuit after an 18-year-old construction worker lost his life in what his family says was a preventable accident.
Teen Worker Killed at Oregon Construction Site
The tragedy took place in Oregon City in July 2025. Lucas Gray, just 18 years old, was working a summer job before heading to college.
He was employed by ICON Construction and Development and had only one week left on the job when the accident happened.
How the Incident Happened
According to reports, Lucas was lying on the ground clearing debris from a water valve box when a heavy construction vehicle ran over him.
The machine involved was a John Deere 544L wheel loader, weighing over 30,000 pounds.
Investigators later confirmed:
- Lucas was working inside an in-road valve box
- The vehicle operator did not see him
- He was crushed and died at the scene
His mother described a devastating moment when she arrived and could only recognise his boots and hat.
Safety Violations Found
The incident was investigated by Oregon OSHA, which found serious safety failures at the site.
The report highlighted that basic precautions were missing, such as:
- Spotters to guide heavy machinery
- Warning signs or barricades
- Traffic cones to alert workers and drivers
Due to these violations, the company was fined over $31,000.
Family Files $35 Million Lawsuit
Lucas Gray’s family has now filed a wrongful death lawsuit against:
- Serres Farms Development, LLC
- TR Oregon Holdings, Inc.
They are seeking $35 million in damages and have requested a jury trial.
Allegations of Poor Site Management
The lawsuit paints a picture of a poorly managed and unsafe work environment. One key piece of evidence is a text message sent by the same equipment operator days before the incident.
In the message, the operator warned about:
- Lack of coordination among workers
- Confusion and poor communication
- An overall disorganised job site
The message suggested that safety risks were already known before the accident happened.
Concerns About Supervision
Another serious issue raised in the lawsuit is the absence of proper supervision:
- The site superintendent was reportedly not present on the day of the incident
- Workers claimed this was a regular occurrence
- Some said the supervisor would leave the site multiple times daily
This lack of oversight may have contributed to the unsafe conditions.
Legal and Company Response
The family’s lawyer described the situation as basic safety failures, saying such mistakes should never happen, especially with young workers.
Meanwhile, the company has not commented on the lawsuit due to ongoing legal proceedings. However, earlier they expressed grief and said they were cooperating with the investigation.
