Charleston, S.C.—Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum is all set to honour the heroic legacy of the USS Laffey with two special days of events on April 15 and 16. The historic ship, famously known as “The Ship That Would Not Die,” will come alive through living history, powerful stories, and moving ceremonies.
Visitors will get the rare chance to walk in the footsteps of real sailors, learn about the ship’s brave history, and see exactly how the crew fought to survive during one of World War II’s deadliest attacks.
April 15 – Live Like a Sailor Day
On the first day, April 15, Patriots Point will offer an exciting program called “Live Like a Sailor Day.” This day is all about bringing history to life and helping people understand what it was like to serve on the USS Laffey.
One of the main highlights will be the unveiling of a brand-new exhibit showing the ship’s experiences during the Battle of Okinawa, one of the most intense battles of World War II. Visitors will also hear first-hand stories from former USS Laffey crew members, giving a personal and emotional touch to the day.
Another fun feature will be a Lego replica challenge, where visitors can take part in recreating the ship using Lego bricks, adding a creative and engaging twist to the experience.
April 16 – Memorial Ceremony for the 80th Anniversary
The second day, April 16, is all about honouring the fallen and remembering the bravery of those who served on the Laffey. It marks 80 years since the kamikaze attack during the Battle of Okinawa — a key moment in the ship’s history.
A special memorial ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. on the fantail (rear) of the USS Laffey. This will be followed by a presentation from Dr. Kyle Sinisi, a respected history professor at The Citadel, at 1 p.m.
Later in the day, guests can join guided tours of the ship, especially the areas damaged during the kamikaze attack. These tours will offer a closer look at the destruction and the incredible effort made by the crew to save the ship.
At 2 p.m., Lt. Col. James Smith, who is a Patriots Point board member and the grandson of a USS Laffey Okinawa veteran, will share insights on the kamikaze attacks and how the crew survived one of the fiercest battles in naval history.
This two-day event at Patriots Point is more than just a history lesson – it’s a chance to step back in time and truly understand the courage and strength of the USS Laffey’s crew. From interactive activities to powerful memorials, it will be an emotional and unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages. The bravery shown during the Battle of Okinawa lives on through these stories and events, reminding us of the sacrifices made for freedom.
