Queens University swimmer dies in south Charlotte collision

A graduate student and member of the Queens University swim team was killed in a car crash over the weekend in south Charlotte, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Fatal Crash on Queens Road West

Police said the crash happened around 2:15 a.m. on May 10 in the 1400 block of Queens Road West. Officers responded to reports of a crash involving injuries and found a BMW M3 that had gone off the right side of the road and crashed into a tree.

Authorities said all occupants inside the vehicle were wearing seatbelts and had to be removed from the car before being transported to local hospitals.

Investigators later confirmed that one of the passengers, 22-year-old Keegan McKenney, died from injuries suffered in the crash.

Queens Swimming Honors Teammate

On Monday, Queens Swimming shared emotional tributes to McKenney on social media, describing him as “Forever a Royal.” McKenney had been part of the university’s swim team since 2022 and was also pursuing graduate studies at the university.

Friends, teammates, and members of the Queens University community expressed sadness over the sudden loss, remembering McKenney for his dedication to the team and positive impact on those around him.

Investigation Continues

Detectives believe the BMW was traveling west when it left the roadway and struck the tree. Police said investigators are still working to determine whether speed or impairment played a role in the crash.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department or Crime Stoppers as the investigation remains ongoing.
