A York County man who participated in the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot has been hired for a counterterrorism-related position within the Pentagon, drawing public attention to his past conviction.
Former Capitol Rioter Hired by Pentagon
Elias Irizarry, a South Carolina resident who was convicted for his role in the Capitol riot and later pardoned, has been selected for a position within the U.S. Department of Defense.
According to reports, Irizarry will work in an office responsible for special operations, counterterrorism and irregular warfare matters.
Convicted Over January 6 Actions
Irizarry was a freshman at The Citadel when he traveled to Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6, 2021.
Court records show he pleaded guilty to entering and remaining in a restricted building after entering the U.S. Capitol during the riot.
He served 14 days in jail and was later among those pardoned by President Donald Trump in January 2025.
Pentagon Defends Appointment
The hiring has generated discussion due to Irizarry’s involvement in the Capitol attack.
In a statement, Pentagon officials defended the decision, describing Irizarry as a qualified candidate and expressing support for his appointment.
New Role in Defense Department
Irizarry is expected to serve in a department that oversees sensitive national security matters, including counterterrorism and special operations activities.
