A Pennsylvania man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of a pregnant woman and her unborn child.
Life Sentence for Double Murder
Isaac Smith, 30, was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of 26-year-old Karli Short and first-degree murder of her unborn child.
Authorities said Short was about five months pregnant when she was fatally shot in September 2021.
Victim Lured Outside Home
According to prosecutors, Short was at her uncle’s home in McKeesport when she received a phone call and went outside to meet someone.
Moments later, her uncle heard a gunshot and found that she had been shot in the head.
Investigators later determined that Smith had arranged to meet Short shortly before the killing.
Motive Revealed During Investigation
Prosecutors said Smith and Short had been involved in a romantic relationship and that Short believed he was the father of her unborn child.
Authorities argued that Smith feared his current girlfriend would learn about the pregnancy and the relationship.
Investigators later discovered that Smith was not actually the father of the unborn child.
Family Speaks Out
During sentencing, family members described Short as excited about becoming a mother and spoke about the lasting impact of her death.
The court sentenced Smith to life in prison without parole, ensuring he will spend the remainder of his life behind bars.
