A Georgia man is facing murder charges after authorities say he fatally stabbed a woman aboard an Atlanta commuter train.
Woman Fatally Stabbed on MARTA Train
Federal prosecutors said surveillance footage showed 25-year-old John Elijah Matthews standing near 66-year-old Margaret Swan on a MARTA train on May 30.
According to investigators, Matthews allegedly pulled out a folding knife and stabbed Swan about 20 times in the chest and neck.
Authorities said Swan attempted to defend herself during the attack.
Passengers Flee as Attack Unfolds
Prosecutors said passengers on the train called for help and moved away from the scene for safety.
Investigators reported that there was no evidence of any interaction between Matthews and Swan before the attack.
Suspect Arrested at Station
When the train stopped at the Oakland City station, MARTA police officers quickly took Matthews into custody.
Authorities said he was found with a folding knife believed to be the weapon used in the attack and had blood on his clothing.
Multiple Charges Filed
Matthews has been charged with murder in Fulton County.
Federal prosecutors have also charged him with committing an act of violence causing death on a mass transportation system.
Family Remembers Victim
Swan’s daughter described her mother as the foundation of their family and said she regularly used public transportation.
The case remains ongoing, and it is not yet known whether Matthews has entered a plea.
