One person was killed after a tractor-trailer crashed off Interstate 85 near the Mecklenburg-Gaston County line early Tuesday morning.

Fatal Crash on I-85

The crash happened shortly before 1 a.m. on June 3 along I-85 South between the Catawba River and the I-485 interchange near Charlotte.

Authorities said a tractor-trailer left the interstate and traveled down an embankment. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

One Person Dies

Paramedics confirmed that one person died in the crash. No other injuries or hospitalizations were reported.

Officials have not released the identity of the victim.

Traffic Delays Followed

Emergency crews, including firefighters, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police and North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers, responded to the scene.

A wrecker was later used to pull the damaged tractor-trailer back onto the roadway.

The crash caused major traffic delays on I-85 South, with backups stretching for several miles into Gaston County before conditions improved later in the morning.
