Authorities in Michigan are investigating a deadly home explosion as a possible murder-suicide attempt after a man was found dead and his wife was seriously injured.
Home Explosion Destroys House
The explosion happened around 4 a.m. on May 26 at a home in Comstock Park, near Grand Rapids, Michigan.
According to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, emergency crews received dozens of calls reporting the blast and arrived to find the house completely destroyed.
Investigators now believe natural gas was intentionally released inside the basement before the explosion occurred.
Woman Pulled From Burning Home
Officials said two neighbors rushed into the burning home and rescued the injured woman from the wreckage.
The woman, later identified through a fundraiser as Lucy Preston, was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Authorities said she suffered severe burns across much of her body and remains in intensive care on a ventilator.
Investigators stated that without the neighbors’ quick actions, she likely would not have survived.
Husband Found Dead at Scene
Hours after the explosion, officials discovered a body believed to be the woman’s husband inside the debris.
Police believe the incident may have been intentional and connected to domestic issues between the couple.
According to local reports, the pair were in the middle of divorce proceedings at the time of the explosion.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities said evidence collected at the scene, including text messages and statements from the injured woman, pointed investigators toward a possible murder-suicide attempt.
Officials are still trying to determine exactly how the explosion was ignited.
The Kent County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation is expected to take time but confirmed there is currently no danger to the public.
