A South Carolina woman died after being struck by a windblown umbrella while dining on a restaurant patio, officials confirmed.
Woman Killed in Accidental Incident
The Clarendon County Coroner’s Office reported that the incident happened on May 23 at the Driftwood Grill, a restaurant on Lake Marion in Summerton.
First responders were called around 7:40 p.m. for a reported laceration. When they arrived, the woman, later identified as Dana Winger, was unresponsive with head and neck injuries. She was pronounced dead at 8:43 p.m.
How the Accident Occurred
Coroner Jacqueline Blackwell said strong winds suddenly lifted an umbrella from a table, striking Winger while she was dining with her husband.
Emergency medical personnel attempted to revive her but were unsuccessful.
Community Response
Driftwood Grill posted a statement expressing condolences to Winger’s family and acknowledging the impact of the tragic incident on guests, staff, and first responders.
An autopsy is scheduled at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, and the death is being investigated as an accident.
